Types of Ants

There are many different species of ants, but they can be divided into three different castes. These are queens, workers, and/or males.

The queen is the one who provides all the eggs from which the ant colony grows. The workers are also females, but have no wings and are tasked with gathering food, feeding the larvae, and ensuring the nest remains sound. While the males have wings and whose only job is to mate with the queen.

Do Ants Bite or Sting?

Some do and some don’t. Ants such as the army, acrobat, and carpenter ants can bite or sting you. While others such as Allegheny, Argentine, or bigheaded ant do not. What’s important is that any ant that bites or stings represents a danger to those living or working inside.

But it is not just the biting or stinging that may be dangerous. Ants may cause damage to your home as they search for food. Plus, they may also carry debris that over time adds up to creating areas for mold or other infestations to occur.

How to Get Rid of Ants

Getting rid of ants starts with where the colony is located. The mounds you see outside for example represent only a fraction of what is underneath. In your home, ants may create a colony in the walls and even under foundations. Locating the colony is crucial to getting rid of the ants.

Ants will often move inside during the winter months for protection. Plus, while some ants only live for a few days, worker ants often live several years. The queen may live up to 15 years or more depending on several factors. That means once a colony moves inside your home or has quick access to the interior, they will essentially be there forever until you get rid of the colony.

It is why hiring a professional that has the knowledge, experience, and tools to get rid of the colony is so important. Because even if you discover the colony, that may not be the only one in or near your home. A professional exterminator is trained to locate and eradicate the nest using methods that protect those who live or work inside.
